The voice behind "Gabriel" rang the hospital bell: Peven Everett has finished treatment for stage 4 cancer

The Chicago vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Peven Everett has rung the ceremonial bell at Northwestern Hospital — the ritual patients use to mark the end of a course of treatment. He has stage 4 lung cancer.

He posted the video on his own Instagram.

The bell rang the day before; the post appeared a day later, because, as the artist wrote, he needed time to take the moment in.

"I never thought I would see this day because very few do with Stage 4 Lung Cancer. My thanks is to the most high God for giving me this chance," Everett wrote.

Who he thanked

He singled out the team at Northwestern Hospital led by Dr Divya Gupta — and it was a team, he stressed, not one person. His thanks also went to those who were with him at home.

"I thank you for caring for me when I couldn't move for days at a time because chemo was draining the life from my body. On those days that you made sure I was taking my prescriptions even when I didn't want to. It's a heavy burden to watch someone you care about be in that kind of pain," the post reads.

Why the dancefloor knows the name

For club music, Everett is above all the voice of "Gabriel", the 1996 Roy Davis Jr. record that became a cornerstone of soulful house and the garage scene. He himself came to music through jazz and plays trumpet.

He was diagnosed in 2024, and treatment ran for more than two years. He closed the post by promising more updates soon.
