The full soundtrack isn't named yet, but you can already hear part of it: house, disco and Depeche Mode in the GTA VI clip

Rockstar Games has released an extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI — and there is more music in it than a game trailer usually carries. Some of the tracks come from the club world rather than the cinematic one.

The clip was posted by Rockstar Games on the studio's own channel on 27 August.

The video runs twenty-six minutes and forty-eight seconds, and in its first week it picked up more than seventeen million views. The studio says everything in it was captured directly in the game.

Why the soundtrack in this series is a story of its own

In GTA, music has never been background. You hear it through the radio stations inside the game: each has its own format, its own hosts and its own commercials, and those are what players flip between while they drive.

Because of that, the line-up of a GTA soundtrack is traditionally discussed separately from the game itself. For an artist, landing on one of those in-game playlists means a scale of audience that little else can match.

"Captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5," reads the description of the clip from Rockstar Games.

The previous game in the series came out in 2013, and people are still turning its soundtrack into playlists. The new one is set for 19 November.

Rockstar has not said what will make the full track list. The clip shows only what plays in specific scenes — and that was enough to get people talking about the soundtrack.

Who has made the cut so far

The most interesting entry for the dance scene is Mine O' Mine by Aluna and Jayda G. Both work in house, and neither is an obvious pick for a major gaming franchise.

Alongside them is Elderbrook with the duo Bob Moses and their Inner Light. That is melodic house, the kind that in recent years has turned up at festivals and in TV series alike.

The third recognisable track is People Are People by Depeche Mode, recorded before the GTA series existed at all. Together the three add up to a cross-section in which four decades of electronic music stand side by side.
