It began as a monthly mix on a single internet station: the Ralf GUM show now has a four-digit episode number
The German who moved to Johannesburg in 2012 has been making this mix since 2003. And the label it goes out on turns twenty-five this year.

On 23 August the GOGO Music site posted another episode of its weekly mix — number 1085. The show, which Ralf GUM started in 2003, went out once a month at first, and on one internet station only.
The numbering and the dates of the episodes are published by GOGO Music on the page of its own radio show.
Ralf GUM is a German producer who has been behind the decks since 1990 and making his own records since 1993. In 2012 he moved from Germany to Johannesburg, to the place where soulful house was boiling hardest at the time, and he lives there still.
A mix that outgrew its station
According to the official biography, the show began as a monthly and was carried by a single internet station. It now goes out weekly, runs exactly an hour and is broadcast by more than fifty FM and internet stations around the world. The residents rotate: alongside Ralf himself, MAQman, Sir LSG and Themba take the decks.
The latest episodes show exactly that. Number 1085 was put together by Ralf GUM, the one before it by MAQman, and the one before that by Exte C. The format has not changed since the start: an hour of music as a continuous DJ set, with no talk and no presenter in the usual sense.
On our air Ralf GUM is heard with Everything, sung by Jocelyn Mathieu. It came out on GOGO Music in 2013 and remains one of the records he is recognised by fastest.
A label that turns twenty-five this year
Ralf founded GOGO Music in 2001. By his own biography, the label was pivotal to the international breakthrough of Raw Artistic Soul and of Black Coffee — South Africa’s best-known house export.
The catalogue, meanwhile, has reached number one hundred and fourteen. The last four releases: Love Is Love with Diamondancer at the end of May, Dream’s Alive with Thuso Wa Sibini in March, Mirrors with Chinua Hawk in February and Baleea with Mahabhuke last autumn.
Ralf’s own discography holds four albums: Uniting Music, Never Leaves You, which went gold in South Africa, In My City and Progressions.
