You can't love someone out of your system. MARISEM made it a dance

A song about trying to reach indifference — and about coming back every single time. The sound is deliberately lifted from the noughties.

MARISEM

MARISEM has released the single перекохати — dance-pop with a glance back at the pop music of the two-thousands. It came out on the fourth of September and runs two minutes forty-one seconds.

The single was put out across the streaming platforms by the label Best Music.

The title itself is an invented verb, and the whole plot sits inside it. перекохати (roughly “to love someone all the way through”) does not mean falling out of love and walking away — it means driving the feeling to its very end, to indifference. The heroine tries again and again, and every time she comes back.

Not a breakup song

The track is built as a game between two people in which nobody is the first to walk out. This is not the story of a split, it is the story of willingly sinking into a pull that you have no wish to escape.

The sound was picked to match, on purpose: not the minimalist pop of today but a dense dance beat with the recognisable tricks of the noughties — the years when this kind of drama on the dancefloor was the norm.

A small team worked on the track. The music and the lyrics were written by temstime — Artem Shoizholov, who also produced and mixed it; the engineering was handled alongside him by goldy1love, his regular mix engineer.

The single is not a standalone episode: перекохати will go on the artist's debut EP, announced under the title AFFECTS. So it reads more as the trailer for a bigger body of work than as a one-off track.

Why releases like this are worth noticing

The Ukrainian dance scene of recent years grows out of exactly these tiny teams: an artist, a writer, a mix engineer — and a release made with no television behind it and no big budget for rotation.

Streaming catalogues, incidentally, filed перекохати straight under pop. But the beat and the way the track is built pull it much closer to dance electropop than to whatever usually hides behind that tag.

Earlier we wrote about how ARTBAT handed listeners a track that had lived only in their sets for a year.
