Burning Man’s 2027 theme is about things that can’t exist, but do

Burning Man has announced next year’s theme — Spellbound. The city in the Nevada desert will rise from the twenty-ninth of August to the sixth of September 2027.

The theme was announced by the organisers themselves in the project’s official journal.

The wording they put forward as official goes like this: the theme probes the mysteries of playa magic, from the serendipity of a coincidence that rhymes to the awestruck delight of seeing things that can’t be and somehow are anyway.

The one line the whole text rests on

The theme manifesto was written by Stuart Mangrum, director of the philosophical centre of Burning Man Project — a man who first made it out to the festival back in 1993 and is now writing the theme for the third year running. His entire sprawling argument comes down to a single line.

“To create is to cast a spell,” writes Stuart Mangrum.

From there he unfolds the thought through stories: people have always lived in worlds made of narrative, and it is shared invention that makes reality shared. The city that appears in the desert every year and disappears without a trace eight days later is one of those stories too.

Mangrum did not develop the concept alone: the credits give co-authorship a line of its own, and the official theme artwork was made by Corey and Catska Ench.

What is already known about 2027

The dates are out and the countdown on the site is running. About tickets, though, not a word: no prices, no sale dates, only a form to sign up for updates. First-timers are told for now to prepare with last year’s guides, because updated ones do not exist yet.

Mangrum’s previous themes are Axis Mundi this year and Tomorrow Today the year before. Next to them, Spellbound looks the least like an op-ed: instead of musings about the future or about the axis of the world, a conversation about why people still believe in wonder.

For the electronic scene, Burning Man has long been more than a festival: this is where the aesthetics and the sound came from that later spread through clubs all over the world. Which makes next year’s theme a hint at what the stages out there will look like.
