Derek Marin has died — the producer who hid behind half a dozen aliases
The New Yorker known as Modest D, Platonik and PLOY was 52. He died on 31 July; no cause has been disclosed.
New York DJ and producer Derek Marin, known under the aliases Modest D, Platonik and PLOY, has died at the age of 52.

A source close to Faucet Music, the label he founded, confirmed that Marin died on Friday 31 July. No cause of death was disclosed.
He started on drums as a child and moved into electronic production as a teenager. By the mid-nineties Marin was a fixture of New York’s club circuit, and in 2001 he launched Faucet Music, which grew into a network of labels including Subtrak Records, Like Button and Modest Music. His records came out on Thoughtless Music, Plastic City, Get Physical, Superfreq, Little Helpers, Nervous and Toolroom.
Marin’s sound was stripped back and groove-led, somewhere between minimal, tech house and acid. He later moved to Berlin, worked as a soundtrack composer and kept releasing on his own labels.
Behind the decks he was known on both sides of the Atlantic: in Berlin Marin played Golden Gate, Gretchen and Minimal Bar, and in his native New York, Polygon, Eris and Louie & Chan.
