"The rave cave will no longer be as you know it": Scotland's Club 69 closes after 33 years

Scotland's Club 69 in Paisley will close on 10 October. The club has run since 1993 — thirty-three seasons in a basement beneath an Indian restaurant.

The club announced the closure on its own Instagram.

The management's wording is restrained: this was a project for the management team, and that project has, unfortunately, come to an end.

What the owners wrote themselves

In the announcement the club wrote that "the rave cave will no longer be as you know it" and that it is time for a fresh chapter to begin. Over those years the basement hosted Underground Resistance, Juan Atkins and Andrew Weatherall. That reads more like a promise than a farewell: the owners hint at a next project but give no details yet.

The closing programme has not been published. Judging by how such dates run in Britain, it will be announced closer to October — and it is usually the most expensive ticket of the season.

Why small clubs disappear first

The story of Club 69 is typical of the British club map in recent years: basement venues with thirty years behind them are broken not by a lack of audience but by rent and energy costs. What disappears with them is not a sound but the place where a new DJ plays in front of a hundred people for the first time.
