James Murphy, Bob Weston and CC:DISCO! on one record: DFA releases a tribute to JD Twitch
A cover of "The Whole Of The Moon" arrives on vinyl on 2 October, and all proceeds go to two Scottish charities.
The label DFA Records is putting out a record in memory of JD Twitch — co-founder of the Glasgow duo Optimo (Espacio), who died after a short illness.
The release was reported by Resident Advisor.
It is a cover of "The Whole Of The Moon", the 1985 song by The Waterboys. The vinyl arrives on 2 October.
Who gathered for the recording
Teamy leads the recording, joined by Mhairi McClymont, Bob Weston of Shellac, CC:DISCO!, Fantastic Twins and James Murphy. The release holds four versions: Full Moon Mix, Hardway Bros Total Eclipse Mix, Hardway Bros Amorphous Dub and a radio edit.
The Waterboys original has already been covered by Fiona Apple and Bleachers, so choosing that song for a tribute reads as a deliberate nod to its long life beyond its own time.
Why Optimo in particular
Optimo (Espacio) were for years one of the most influential British duos outside the dance mainstream: their Sunday night in Glasgow became a school for a whole generation of DJs. A record assembled from friends and admirers is exactly the kind of remembrance that works better than an obituary.
