‘100% sound system first, lights second, design third’: Ministry of Sound invites you to its 35th
The headline moment is a joint Kerri Chandler and Moodymann set on Saturday daytime.
Ministry of Sound will mark 35 years with a weekend-long party on 2 and 3 October at its home in Elephant & Castle, welcoming guests who helped “define Ministry of Sound’s dancefloor”.
Mixmag reported the plans.
Who plays at the anniversary
On Friday 2 October the club hosts its long-running Louder party, headlined by Andy C, who returns to the venue for the first time in ten years with a three-hour set.
On the Saturday afternoon, Hard Times brings two legends together: Kerri Chandler and Moodymann play an extended hybrid performance. In the evening the Urge party returns, headlined by Loco Dice. More artists are to be announced.
“Few venues get to celebrate 35 years at the heart of dance music,” says club director Matt Long. “We wanted to mark this milestone with a line-up that reflects both our heritage and where our sound is today.”
To mark the anniversary the club is also publishing a book, Ministry of Sound: Anthology, charting more than three decades of the London institution.
A club that started in a bus garage
Ministry of Sound opened on 21 September 1991 in a disused bus garage on Gaunt Street in Elephant and Castle. Three founders set it up — James Palumbo, Justin Berkmann and Humphrey Waterhouse — with New York’s Paradise Garage, which Berkmann visited beforehand, as the model.
He put his idea without ornament.
“My concept for Ministry was purely this: 100% sound system first, lights second, design third.”
They built to that logic: half a million pounds went on the system itself and as much again on magnesite soundproofing — the club was tested at 156 decibels with no sound leaking outside. In 2016, together with Dolby, they installed 64 speakers and 22 channels of Dolby Atmos, a first for a nightclub.
As ONE//FM reported earlier, another London club has an October birthday too — fabric is stretching its 27th across 30 hours.
