The album Brian Eno wrote for airports will finally be played in one — live, by a chamber ensemble
On 20 September six musicians of the Manchester Camerata will perform ‘Ambient 1: Music for Airports’ right inside the terminal. It is only the second time in the record’s history.
Brian Eno’s album ‘Ambient 1: Music for Airports’ — a record conceived for airports — will be performed exactly where it belongs, for the first time in twenty years.
Mixmag reported the news. The performance takes place on 20 September at Manchester Airport, given by the chamber orchestra Manchester Camerata.
Six musicians from the orchestra will play it, in an arrangement by Will Newell, and not once but twice: the first session from 2pm to 3pm, the second from 3.45pm to 4.45pm.
The venue is no accident either: Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2, the ‘super-terminal’ that doubled in size in 2021 after a £1.5-billion transformation.
The concert is part of the Here We Are festival, in which the orchestra plays across all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester — a run of free and deliberately accessible shows.

The intention is plain: to calm people at the departure gate and let them hear the work as it was intended. Eno wrote it in the first place because he had had enough of the canned music he endured while travelling through airports.
This will be only the second time ‘Music for Airports’ has been performed in an airport. The first came in 2006 at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, where the New York ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars played the album live.
