A song with no double bottom, named after the river of her childhood: ONUKA has released ‘DESNA’
Nata Zhyzhchenko calls their sound a ‘folk rave’.
ONUKA — the Ukrainian electro-folk duo of Nata Zhyzhchenko and Yevhen Filatov — has presented a new single, ‘DESNA’. The title refers to the river that runs through Chernihiv, the artist’s home city.

Why there are no symbols this time
For ONUKA this is an unexpectedly carefree record. A band that spent years building songs on hidden symbols and layered meanings has this time deliberately given them up in favour of pure emotion and dancefloor drive. ‘DESNA’ is about being here and now.
“It’s that state when you want to turn the music on, drive and think about nothing. It’s pure joy — no subtexts, no dedications. Just a moment, light as spring,” says the band’s leader Nata Zhyzhchenko.
For all its lightness, every listener can find their own meaning in the track. For many, ‘DESNA’ will be a song about home — about the safest place on earth, the one you carry in your heart and return to despite time and distance.
“For me this song is about my place of strength. About what has nourished me since childhood, holds me and helps me find a reason to live through this time. For me that is the Chernihiv Ramparts. It is my own personal ‘enchanted Desna’,” Zhyzhchenko says.
A folk rave
Musically ‘DESNA’ is a bright, energetic Ukrainian rave — or, as Nata calls it, a ‘folk rave’. That is exactly what ONUKA sounds like now.
The band announced that this release was their last Ukrainian-language single of the year: next comes an English-language EP that is meant to open a new stage for the duo.
